Unlocking Your Creativity is pleased to announce another 8 week course looking at the basics of theatre writing. We’ll study The Loverby Harold Pinter as a group, and a theatre show will be recommended for viewing during the course (ticket price not included). Complete your own short play by the end of the course, or make inroads into work on a longer one, and share some of your work, new or existing, for feedback.
Susan Hodgetts
I am a playwright, teacher, dramaturg, actor, musician and creativity coach.
I graduated from Goldsmiths College in 2011 with a Masters’ Degree in Writing for Performance, and in 2012 from Faber Academy: Writing a Novel, tutored by Esther Freud. I studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama from 2008 – 2009, and jointly ran a short film production company from 2005 – 2009.
I recently taught a part-time enrichment class at Greenwich Free School in Writing for Theatre (ages 11-13), and have a specific interest in theories of creativity and the therapeutic value of writing. Accordingly, I’ve developed my own creative writing courses based around unlocking creativity, and combined yoga and writing workshops that look specifically at enhancing creative potential.
I also run a script feedback service for other writers who value practical feedback delivered with sensitivity and within a quick turnaround time.
My plays include One (RADA); Violent Night (New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth); Prisoners of the Truth (Theatre 503, Frequency Theatre, Sydenham Arts Festival); Family Ties (Network Theatre, London); Slash (Young Actors’ Theatre, RADA); The Sky at Night (Lorgean Theatre, Romania) and Time of the Wolf, an adaptation of The Ages of Mankind from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, staged at Brixton Market, and Viviana, a monologue performed at the Short Story Studio at the Komedia, Brighton.
As an actor, I’ve played Heather in the short film Perceptions of a Portrait (2tails Films) which I also co-wrote. I appeared as Helen in the play Remember Me (by Lisa Brunton-Wallace) and Maggie in the radio version of The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle (both at the Network Theatre). As a musician (pianist) I’ve appeared in Time for Love by Rosie De Vekey, also at the Network Theatre.
Recently, I played the lead’s mother in the music video Last Breath by Ekkoes, and sang in the exhibit Everything I Do I Do it Big, by Lina Lapelyte at the DRAF Gallery.

Awards/ Wins
WINNER Violent Night won the Jilted Generation competition run by the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth, in 2012. The play was performed as part of Portsmouth Bookfest.
SHORTLIST The idea for Jilted, a full-length play, was shortlisted for the FFShorts Festival 2013 @ the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.

Susan’s warm, welcoming and open-minded nature made our site-specific workshop very much alive. As a complete novice to writing still struggling to find my own voice, I was excited to learn about existing forms and templates of literary expression.
